UPI for Dadi

A product design question from a product manager interview, set at Sahaj Pay, a fictional payments / upi company.

The question

You're a PM at Sahaj Pay, a UPI payments app in India. Leadership wants to serve senior citizens (65+) better. Design a UPI payments experience for them. What ships in v1, how do you measure it, and what comes next?

A starting structure

Goal → one senior segment → fears and pain points → v1 features → usage metric and safety guardrail

How to approach this case

Clarify the goal first: more payments, safer payments, or seniors paying without help, and what you can't change in the UPI flow. '65+' covers very different people, so pick one group, such as seniors who use WhatsApp but rarely pay, seniors who already pay, or those who rely on a child. Ask what they pay for and what scares them, then rank those fears. Separate convenience features from safety features, and be explicit about where friction protects users and where it just gets in the way. Think about the role of family, both as helpers and as people who can set things up. Scope v1 tightly and say what you are deferring and why. A strong close pairs a usage metric with a safety guardrail, so you can tell seniors are safer, not just more active.
