Standups across time zones

A product design question from a product manager interview, set at Ticketyard, a fictional developer tools / issue tracking company.

The question

You're a PM at Ticketyard, an issue and project tracker for software teams. More and more of our customers have teams spread across three or more time zones. Design a feature that helps teams collaborate asynchronously around work items (tickets, bugs, epics).

A starting structure

Segment teams by hours of time-zone spread, pick one, then map how a work item moves from one person's evening to another's morning

How to approach this case

Start by asking what the company wants from this feature: retention, seat growth, or simply happier teams. Ask about the team, timeline and data you can use, such as ticket history, commits and each user's working hours. Then segment customers by how far apart their time zones are and pick the group with the most pain. Name a primary persona, for example the engineer waiting on someone else, and a secondary one. Walk through a day: where does status live today, and what happens to a question raised at the end of someone's day? Generate a few ideas and rank them on impact and effort. Say what you would not build and why. A strong close defines a small first version, a north star with a baseline, a guardrail on notification fatigue, and a beta with a fair comparison group.
