Watch party for a billion
A product design question from a product manager interview, set at StreamSutra, a fictional video streaming / live sports company.
The question
Skills this case tests
A starting structure
Goal first (minutes watched per match, return for the next match), then viewers by how they watch: alone, with family in one room, with friends in other places, at work
How to approach this case
Ask what the business wants from co-watching first. Is it more minutes per match, more people coming back for the next match, or new subscribers? Then ask about the timeline and the team, since a big tournament date changes what you can ship. Segment viewers by how they watch today: alone on a phone, with family in front of a TV, with friends in other cities, or in quick glances at work. Pick one segment and say why the others matter less for this goal. Live cricket adds hard limits: tens of millions of people watching at once, patchy mobile data and the need to keep group chat safe. Design with those limits in mind. A strong close names a small first version, one main metric, guardrails for streaming quality and safety, and a fair way to test it.
