The assignments nobody opens

A product case question from a product manager interview, set at Kodeshala, a fictional upskilling bootcamp company.

The question

You're a PM at Kodeshala, a job-linked coding bootcamp with 6-month cohorts. Learners pay upfront or through an income-share plan (they pay a share of salary after getting a job). Only about half of enrolled learners even open their weekly assignments, and course completion has been dropping cohort over cohort. Figure out why, and improve it.

A starting metric tree

Completion = enrolled learners × assignment open rate × submission rate, tracked week by week within a cohort and across cohorts

How to approach this case

First define the terms: what counts as opening an assignment, what completion means and which business outcome it drives, such as placements and income-share revenue. Then look at the drop over time in two ways. Within a cohort, is it a steady slide or a cliff at a certain week? Across cohorts, why does each one do worse than the last? If you find a cliff, ask what changes about the assignments at that point. Segment learners by background, device, payment plan and study habits, and check whether the mix of learners has shifted between cohorts. Test each popular explanation against the data before accepting it. Look for any group where something different was tried. A strong close gives a prioritised fix, a leading metric, guardrails on project quality, and the value of a few extra points of completion.
