Should we do hotels?

A product strategy question from a product manager interview, set at Ghoomstay, a fictional travel & hospitality company.

The question

You're a senior PM at Ghoomstay, an Indian home-rental marketplace where hosts list homes, villas and apartments for short stays. The brand promise is "stay somewhere with character". Leadership wants to start listing boutique hotels alongside homes. The CEO asks you: should Ghoomstay do it, and if so, how?

How to approach this case

Ask what leadership wants from hotels: growth, revenue, or keeping guests who book elsewhere. Keep the brand promise in view, since stays with character is why guests choose this app. Then work from guest needs, not from the supply. Which searches does the app fail today, by date, city and length of stay? Size how much of any gain would be genuinely new business. List options beyond hotels, including changes to how homes are listed and priced. Think about how hosts would react. Weigh the cost and speed of different ways to launch. A strong close gives a clear yes or no, a narrow pilot with a holdout, guardrails for host earnings and brand, and kill criteria.
