Should we bring back commission?
A product strategy question from a product manager interview, set at Bazaario, a fictional value e-commerce company.
The question
Skills this case tests
A starting structure
Net revenue per order = seller ads + logistics and other fees (+ commission, if it comes back)
How to approach this case
Turn the goal into a number first: what is revenue per order today, what does +25% mean in rupees, and what does 'without slowing NMV growth' rule out? Ask how central 0% commission is to seller acquisition and marketing before treating 2% as free money. Then lay out every way revenue per order can rise as a tree: what sellers pay, what buyers pay and what brands pay. For the commission itself, think about who really bears it on thin-margin listings and how sellers are likely to respond. Size each option per order and test it against the NMV guardrail instead of ranking ideas by gut feel. A strong close answers the CEO's yes-or-no question directly, shows a sequenced plan whose pieces add up to the target, and names the guardrails you would review every month.
